They collect the bottles and then Maple View comes and gets them and sterilizes them and reuses them. I won't swear that it's in the Raleigh HTs, but I know the ones in Chapel Hill carry it. Whole Foods should have it, too. It's pretty widely distributed in the Triangle. Food Lion may have it.
ETA: their website says that the HTs in Cameron Village and North Raleigh have it.
Yes, the deposit for Maple View Farm milk works the same way at Harris Teeter as it does at Weaver Street.
I can tell you Maple View milk is delicious. It's also available in Lowes foods stores I think.
I assume they do the glass bottles to possibly keep costs down (yes up front costs are more, but they're used over and over) and it is better for the environment too. Lots of small dairies around the country use the same system. Also, no chance of chemicals leaching out of the container into the milk.

I buy it at Kings Red & White in Durham and they work it the same way. We paid the deposit the first time we bought milk, but I always bring my bottles to the store when I got to buy more so the deposit and the return cancel each other out.
I rarely drink milk on its own, but my husband swears that it tastes fresher and better.
We've been trying to buy local as much as possible, with local and organic being the ideal.
My kids have a steady diet of Lactaid (a couple are Lactose intolerant) - that stuff is expensive. And in Harris Teeter it costs more per ounce to buy the larger container, backwards logic or profit machine, you decide....
I saw a commercial today for Campbell's organic soup that made me chuckle. The mom states the soup is really good. The dad agrees and adds how nice it is to know what they are putting into their son's body. Meanwhile, the son is eating a glue stick.
It humored me because not only does it sell their product but also makes fun of the people who buy it.
these are not grass fed cows- they eat mostly grain and then are allowed to graze on some grass. the milk produced from corn fed cows is chemically different (i.e., bad for you) than milk from fully grass fed cows. Try reading The Omnivore's Dilemna for a reference.

They sell Lactaid at Costco!
