I am wondering if an associate degree in computer information technology can earn a salary in the 40k range in NC? I am asking this question here because I know some states pay a lot more than NC forthe same job. I am satisfied with 40k a year, and will be extremely happy with a 50k salary after years of experience. I only have an associate degree and work as a technical support to get my foot on the door for better opportunities. I live in Raleigh, and I don't think I will get my bachelor degree.

I get under 30k a year at my job and I am settled for now. I am planning to stay at least a year or two before I move to better a career and hopefully I can get paid in the 30k range. So, I am wondering is it common to get paid that much with only an associate and a couple of certificates in computer information technology?

Yes. A degree is a piece of paper, don't let it define you. Go after what you want.

I think you will be locked out of the majority of IT jobs, and you will suffer salary and position growth wise long term because of the level of your degree.

... Regardless of your present skill levels and abilities to pick up new ones.

Hopefully you'll come across places willing to look beyond the paper.

If you are a driven person that knows the job well a piece of paper will not matter. You can easily hit your money goal and go right past. Just keep pushing to move up and network with people as much as possible.

Good luck!!

John

If you have skills and can demonstrate them, your career will advance over time and you'll do fine in that field.

I've hired software engineers (100K salary) with no degree.

Yes. Many of the IT folks at my company make well over that and don't have a degree at all. A lot of them started at the helpdesk and moved on to other positions within the department. One person has gone on to get their bachelor's degree but that was a goal he set for himself, not required by the company, the perk being that work paid for it though since we have tuition reimbursement.

give you some encouragement... Bill Gates was a college drop-out and has no degree.. Get your certifications you should do fine.

Now education is important but don't let them fool you most colleges are a money sucking machines that have no right to be called a Not for profit organization.

If you're a good programmer, you can exceed that if you try.

Beware, there are plenty of companies out there that are hung up on degrees. I work for one specifically. Doesn't matter if you can showcase your programming talent, if you don't have the masters in CS, you aren't going anywhere near a software engineering position. YMMV, this is just my experience thus far.
