I didn't know that there were homes in that zone under 300k.
There are indeed homes in that range. Thing is, people move here pretty often from higher-COL areas wanting new construction and 3000-plus sq ft homes and are disappointed that they cannot get that for under 350k, so you usually hear of these neighborhoods when someone like yourself presents wanting, well... what it is you're looking for.

I'd give Park Village a closer look. I think that for 300k or just under it, you can find a 4 br house with a 2-car garage and you will get your family-friendly area with fairly stable schools and still have that option to go private IF the assignments ever change.

I take the bus everyday between downtown and N. Raleigh. As long as he doesn't need to transfer and change buses it is no big deal. During the evening commute sometimes the buses are running late but I have never had a problem in the mornings, but then again I go in pretty early. Plus I don't have to deal with drivers not paying attention, cutting in front of me, riding my bumper, etc except for the short 1 mile drive from my house to where I catch the bus.

Oh - and although they are grown now, my kids went to private school.
