Hey! My husband and I will be moving to Raleigh around Lake Johnson in the next month or so. We're both avid swimmers and swim for exercise year-round. We also like having access to cardio and weight equipment. I'm having a hard time finding a place that offers both a gym and a pool and preferably a variety of classes near where we'll be living. The only places I've found are the YMCA and Lifetime which honestly both are a bit too expensive for us as recent graduates. Is the Y the least expensive/best option? Would love to know if other gyms in the area have indoor pools. Thanks!

Fitness Connection, which has 5 branches around the area (3 Raleigh, 1 Cary, 1 RTP) has pools at 3 of its locations, but none are down near your part of town. The closest one to you with a pool would be at North Hills in North Central Raleigh. It's inexpensive, but some would say you "get what you pay for". That branch is one of the newer ones (built about 10 years ago) and they do have classes, etc, but it depends on what level of that kind of thing you're looking for. I find it fine for my needs but I am not a big "gym nut". No, the YMCA is not inexpensive--probably more expensive than many. You might check offerings in Garner, too.

The Fitness Connection in RTP does have an indoor pool and a good variety of exercise equipment. The pool is on the first floor, while the equipment is upstairs. Make that industrial metal stairs that will remind you if fire exist at most office buildings, Ugh.

And the last time I visted (probably late 2013 or early 2014), the smell of urine and sweat was pervasive.

Fitness Connection is probably your best best for a cheap gym-with-pool. I swam at the one at North Hills for 6-8 months, but eventually cancelled my membership because the pool would close down arbitrarily for maintenance with no warning and nobody at the health club would have any idea when it was going to open again. The pool was apparently owned by the Renaissance hotel next door so the health club didn't have any control over when it was open or not.

There are the Y's around town, and there are Rex Wellness Centers that have pools (I swim at the one in Garner now) but they're both significantly more expensive.

My sister volunteered at the Rex Wellness one Sat. a month and got to use the facilities for free. You may want to see if they still allow that.

I really think the Y is likely your best option. The one on Hillsborough St is awesome and worth the fees. Ask about any special rates they've got and ask your employer(s) to see if they'll reimburse.

The Y is also a non-profit organization and offers income-based financial assistance. Alexander and Finley Y's in Raleigh both have indoor pools.

I really like the Y on Hillsborough St.

There is also a pool on Jones Franklin Rd, Raleigh Swim Association https://www.teamunify.com/Home.jsp?team=ncrsa

There is also an indoor pool at Pullen Park in Raleigh, look up Raleigh Parks and Rec,

I go to that one a few times a week now--don't recall the smell of urine, but of course you're going to smell sweat in a gym But I agree that it not what one would think of as a "flashy new club". The pool was actually out of commission for a while this summer. However, the dues are cheap and it gives you three local choices of pools (and two other clubs without pools) if desired.

The Y - you can get a Triangle membership and swim at Alexander (downtown and closest to you), Cary, Kraft, and Finley. Totally beautiful facilities and great people.
