here's what worked for me....i waited until it was 50 degrees outside (or less ) and flooded them with water. the ants appear
sluggish on the surface at that temperature and most drown without escaping. it was 50 on June 9th at my house. although my property is surrounded by several mounds, none have survived a second treatment on my land.

I bought that stuff and a 1 gallon sprayer. I spray my crawl space once a month and the outside foundation as well. I get ZERO bugs inside my home since using this. Not sure what the pest control guys use but that stuff works amazing, and it will last a very long time. A couple ounces in a gallon of water will treat an entire home easily. I googled this stuff and it works on fire ants as well.

I also lived in New Orleans (that's where I had my 'Basic Combat Training' against fire ants).

The problem with gas, fire, standard poisons, etc. is that they all kill a lot of workers <yay!!!> but NOT the queen. Sometimes it looks like you zapped the nest, and don't realize that the 'new nest' 20 feet away is just the old one, relocated and now large enough to show.

Flooding will work, but only if you have sandy soil, AND the ground can shift so that the water causes the ground to fully collapse and bury the queen or enough of her workers that she dies.

I also noticed that the fire ants liked to make nests under protection. Like under a sidewalk with the egress tunnels along the edge. That wouldn't be effected by fire or flooding.

Use a bait system and Kill The Queen. Be patient and be sure.
