I am considering a job in the Chapel Hill area and I will have to relocate for the job. I am looking for area to move to within a 30 minute drive of Chapel Hill. Preferably I'd like to be out in the country, somewhere that has a fairly low crime rate. It can be a smaller town or even more of a rural setting. Any suggestions I could look into? Thank you.

Basd on what you described and where you are working (Chapel Hill) I would look into Hillsborough.

Town of Hillsborough, North Carolina | The Town of Hillsborough Government, NC

It only takes about 10-15 minutes to get from one side of Chapel Hill to the other so pretty much anywhere in Orange County, northern Chatham or southern Alamance counties could meet your needs. There are parts of NW Durham county that would qualify, too. None of those areas are particularly known for crime. I think they're all pretty safe.

What else do you need in a place? Want room for horses or want to be in a neighborhood? Lower property taxes or best schools? Is there some reason you don't want to be in Chapel Hill or Carrboro? Want somewhere less expensive? Funky hippie shops or close to big discount stores and malls?

I'm not sure that Hillsborough is any smaller than Carrboro, though it is a little smaller than Chapel Hill + Carrboro. The differences between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough are smaller in my mind than those between Chapel Hill and Raleigh. CH and H-boro are both small(ish) towns for my money. YMMV.

First thing that comes to my mind is the Chatham County part of Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and the outerlying areas of Carrboro. The outerlying areas of Chapel Hill in Orange County are very country as well. These are all very beautiful and pretty areas. I suggest a trip down so you can see for yourself what appeals to you best.
