If my kids really want to go next year we might, but we often go to the mountains in October instead.

Thanks for posting Atony. I hadn't read it before.
I like my memories of the fair, mostly.

Great article, been here 5 months and I agree with a lot of it. First time I'm hearing about this Fair stuff, though.

I've been going to the NC State Fair since I was in high school (we used to skip school on Friday to go)!

Year after year, we've taken the kids. It gets very expensive with kids!

Now that my kids are grown, they still go BUT...not with me and not on my dime!

So, hubby and I go. We do what WE want to do and buy what WE want to buy.

I love it!

Oh boy! '12 things I learned my first year in the triangle'.....how come no one ever ask the 13 things I learned or the 465th thing I leaned in the first year? Oh well here are my 12...no particular order or are they?

1. Came in September. Still was hot!
2. Thanksgiving Day was warmer then June 25 back in N.Y.
3. December shorts were still not put away in the dresser drawers.
4. January..the month to ice fish was difficult...there was just to much UN-frozen water!
5. There were more subdivisions to visit then I had gas money for!
6. Schools for kids had trailers but here they called them cottages! How regal.
7. Pulled Pork barbecue sandwiches had a whole lot of vinegar on them and topped with cole slaw...Bazinga!
8. There were more moving company trucks on the roads then N.Y. had taxi cabs!
9. I had to get IN-surance down here after my N.Y. insurance ran out.
10. October State Fair was hotter then July in N.Y. Also, there were more people on a Saturday then Time Square on New Years Eve.
11. Accidents became 'Wrecks' on the roadways here.
12. 1 through 11 above made it all worth it.

P.S. Now to work on the next 12.

13. Capital Boulevard a.k.a. US Route 1 is a Congo line of vehicles heading south in the AM and north in the PM....cha-cha-cha!

My 12:

1. We're barely in the area which gets snow. This is kind of sad.

2. People are very polite and friendly. Coming from S. Florida, where they're rude/indifferent, that was a shock to me.

3. People don't run red lights here, well rarely. Excellent!

4. People will let you into their lane. Again, excellent.

5. Summer ends in mid-September, not mid-November. Love this.

6. Yellow pollen. Egads! WTH is this stuff? Month of April = porch covered with tarps/plastic.

7. Cool/cold on Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas* as it should be!

8. State Fair! It's cool living in the state capital just because of stuff like this.

9. N.C. barbecue. Meh.

10. Parks/outdoors. Lots of cool places to hike and bike!

*except Christmas this year, regrettably. It was more like a Fort Lauderdale Christmas. BAH HUMBUG!

If you haven't seen yet, BBQ can be like politics and religion - not to be discussed between those with opposing views!

Two important facts
1) There is no "NC Barbecue". There is Western NC BBQ (tomato based sauce) and Eastern NC BBQ (vinegar based sauce).
2) BBQ is a noun, not a verb.

It is nice to have screens BUT...don't count on opening your windows in the spring unless you want our lovely pollen INSIDE your home!
