Hello all,

Our relocation plan for this summer from So FL to Raleigh area is going as planned so far, however, I'm looking for wisdom regarding the logistic part, especially from those of you who have already made the move.

The question is whether to rent and drive a truck myself, hire movers, or use a container service, and if so what companies are good.

I would appreciate input from personal experiences. I know that a move like this is very stressful, and so I'd like to minimize the stress as much as possible while trying not to break the bank. We're looking at a 2 bedroom move.

Thank you all

Paul

I have used movers twice and moved myself thrice. I have never used a container. The movers simplify many things but they make their own timeline and things disappear. Moving yourself will require help from people and is quite the hassle but way cheaper, if your company is not paying.

How many people do you have to help you load and unload furnishings?

Do you plan to slowly pack up or do you want to get it all at once?

The container services are pretty pricey these days.

We used a well known long distance moving company - we packed ourselves, except for breakables we had them pack. Worked out well - you get what you pay for.

We made the move from MA to NC and then another move from NC to FL. We studied all three options and both times opted to rent a truck from Penske and do it oursleves. It was much cheaper and we preferred doing things on our schedule. However, going forward, that would not be an option.....so hopefully this house is the last house until my expiration date.

Hire local loaders to fill your UHaul or Penske truck.
Drive it here.
Hire local labor to unload. TROSA is one that provides labor on the hour.

I'm only 49 but have moved from PA-IL, IL-CA, CA-OR, OR-CA, CA-NC. When I was a lot younger I would pack and drive myself. But the last few trips have been with traditional moving companies. I'm much happier that way. Yes they've lost a few odd things (teapot lid, metal handle to a scrub brush). Mostly using moving companies has been a good experience. I don't have to invite friends over to pack and unpack.

If you need to put things in storage, a container company like ABF is the way to go. If you don't just rent a truck.

Rent a truck and hire local labor to load/unload if you are price sensitive. You'll have to pack up the stuff but it only takes a few hours to actually load once done.

Thanks all. Great advice.

I'll probably rent a truck, load it here with friend's help, and hire help there...
