Yeah. This is just an old bluebird house we made with the kids probably 10 years ago. I just repaired it with some scrap I had around and will probably do the same again. It'll fall completely apart one of these days and then I'll get a new one with the metal.
Do look into the direction the hole is supposed to face. I think that can have a lot to do with whether you successfully attract them.
The SECU in Wake Forest always seems to have them. At $10 they are a great deal. I have several on the property. Unfortunately last year the flying squirrels killed and chased them out of every box. First year that has ever happened.
Does anyone know when SECU will be selling bluebird boxes?

I need a couple. Maybe 3.
You must have a ton of land, as they are very territorial. You may want to look up how far apart they need to be, before buying three......unless you were buying me one.
My blue bird house that has been successful for a decade or more (except when the squirrels chew the opening and make it the wrong size) is on our deck which is a story up over our walk-out basement. Our yard is extremely wooded, but the deck gets the most sun of anywhere. The opening faces east and gets morning sun. We don't have a pole or baffle, but it's up high enough that snakes don't get in it. Black snakes can be pretty rough on nests.
We did have a flying squirrel get in it once and it was the absolute cutest animal I have ever seen in my yard. He didn't hurt any bluebirds. It was either past their nesting time or before. Can't remember.

You're lucky so far. Your bluebirds are living on borrowed time.

No, not at all. The flying squirrel only stayed for 2 or 3 days before my dog scared it off. Super cute little guy, too. I would have loved to have him stay longer, but I was afraid my dog would eat him. And that's not a unfounded fear. She loves to hunt little critters like that.
Deck is too high for snakes. I mean they _could_ get up there, but again with the dog, who likes to tangle with copperheads (see copperhead thread) and presumably would have no problem at all with a black snake.
The bluebirds have been nesting in that box for at least 10 years. I just need to repair this year's squirrel damage.

You're living right if you had nesters in that box at that location for ten years Poppy. I suggest getting rid of that one. Get a good box with lots overhang to keep the rain out. One that opens for cleanouts, and one with a reinforced entry hole. I find that large metal washers with the 1 1/2" hole work perfect. No more cute little squirrels
