1. make a reservation for a large group beforehand,
2. when you arrive (or even better yet make the res) ask them if it's OK to split the check X number of ways.
Never heard of it being a problem under these circumstances. Most places, when told in advance, are happy to have a large group using the servers and the kitchen.
I have yet to go to a restaurant in the area that won't do separate checks. In fact, most places serving what is clearly a group of unrelated people have always asked if we want separate checks.
That's what I was going to say. Our communuty does a lunch about once a month and dinner several times a year. Often 20+ peoole. Never had a problem, but I'm sure it's all pre arranged. Same thing when I used to do lunch with a meetup group (which regularly screwed the restaurant by making reservations for 20 or more but only five or six actually showed up.)
No, wait - we do pay in advance for the annual Christmas Tea at Duke Washington Inn, but I don't know if that was to secure the privae room ir because they wouldn't split checks.

I would just call first to make sure. I'm a member of several Meetup groups and generally speaking we don't have a problem. We did have an issue with two restaurants in Chapel Hill in the same shopping center that either wouldn't split the check, or wouldn't accept more than X number of credit cards in a table. I wasn't very happy to have to go out in the pouring rain to find an ATM. Luckily we found that out as we sat down, so we at least had some time to prepare.
Just the other week we had a large group (15+), and while the check wasn't split, we each went up to the register and paid for what we ate. They ticked things off as people paid, and in the end only 1 order of naan wasn't accounted for (and the organizer paid for it). That's kind of the slow way to do it for such a large group, but it worked out.

Mind sharing the name of those two restaurants in Chapel Hill so our group avoids them?
