Caution is the name of the game when selling anything- if you get a weird 'vibe' from someone trust your instincts. When possible, try to do any buying/selling in a public spot ( police dept parking lot my favorite choice!).

Wow! In Portland I would just leave my Craigslist stuff on the front porch and people just left the cash in my mailbox. And this in a city with a higher crime rate than any where in The Triangle.

I have sold moving boxes on craigslist. I did have one person not show up but all the other encounters went just fine. I plan on selling more things once we get organized!

I've been hesitant use use Craig's list because of safety -- is it really safe to have complete strangers come to the house to buy stuff? Single middle aged female living alone in Cary...
on the other hand, I don't know how I'm going to sell my furniture when, in late 2008, I retire, totally downsize, and head back home to NM... can't exactly tote a sofa to the police parking lot, right?

You can borrow my dog! 170+ pounds of no nonsense attitude!
OR...have a male friend ( the biggest one you can find) be there with you. No one has to know hes just a friend.
My mom is single, middle aged and has sold stuff and had people come over to look at things shes selling furniture) and never had a problem.
I've had people come to my house in the middle of nowhere and never had a problem.

I sell stuff on Craigslist a lot, and if I can move the item, I usually try to meet in public rather than have anyone come to the house, but I have had good luck. You do have to wade through a lot of emails from people who don't show, etc. but I find if someone is willing to give me their phone# for meeting up, they will usually show up. For big stuff, I agree with having multiple people in the house when strangers show up.

Another Craigslist fan here....I think I'm addicted! I have sold several things like a child's bedroom set, expensive juicer and more. And scored some amazing deals, the best being my perfect condition Ethan Allen walnut DR set (table, server, china cabinet)! We even sold our old mini van on Craigslist!
I always make sure my husband is home but would ask a neighbor to come over if for some reason that didn't work out. If at all possible, move the item for sale into the garage so no one has to be inside your home out of sight of the neighbors. Better to be safe, in my book.

Craigslist is an awesome resource! I used it to sell my car and couldn't be happier with how that went.
I've never purchased anything via craigslist but know people who have, everything from a sofa to a photo printer.
As with anything, caveat emptor! Don't set yourself up to be a victim, and chances are you won't be.

We've also used Craigslist - not only to buy things but also to find people to do work on our house. It's amazing the number of contractors who follow Craigslist - we recently had 40 responses for a request to pour stamped concrete for a backyard porch.
