I think even with the "college town vibe" Chapel Hill is a great place to live. Yes the real estate is VERY expensive. But if what you want is a small town feel, with good schools, and local character then it is fantastic.

Zip codes for Chapel Hill are 27514 and 27516, and Carborro is 27510. There are homes outside the Chapel Hill School district in these zips...District High schools are Chapel Hill High, East Chapel Hill High, and Carrboro High.

Likes: Bus system, Farmers Market, parks, Weaver St Market, focus on locally owned businesses. Good sense of community.

Dislikes: House values are spinning out of control, which will likely eat into what I like about the area. New developments are trending towards clearcut/flatten/cookie cutter, which I find gross and out of character with the nature of the community.

One thing I constantly amazed by is the number of good restaurants in Chapel Hill. We rarely have to wait to get a seat wherever we go.

College vibe. I have rarely found a friendly person in Chapel Hill and I have lived here my entire life. I find the area very snobbish, expensive, rude and the traffic. And the whole we are better than them which stems from the Hillsborough/Chapel Hill rivalry. Started with Chapel Hill vs Hillsborough High School in football back in the 40s or 50s I believe. They think we are stupid rednecks, we think they are all stuck up jerks.

The good things. More diverse shops such as A Southern Season, Franklin Street, University Mall and there is a wonderful selection of food.

Wow. I visited Chapel Hill and found it to be so down to earth/layed back I was a little surprised. We will be visiting again, but based on how people were dressed, cars they drove, and vibe I got just observing and shopping around, I didn't feel that. From what I saw - it is way lower key from the snobbish area we live in.

Hi....just wondering where the cooky cutter, clear- cut developments are??? I thought Chapel Hill is soooo strict and totally against allowing that type of development!

Please tell me it isn't happening there too! Is no where safe?

no

lol

I like southern seasons. theres some good restaurants. Nice place to spend a day shopping/ visiting. Wouldn't want to live there though. I don't think my 'conservativeness' would be popular there. lol

I found that odd as well, there are no large developments like that I can think of....Meadowmont and Southern Village are both built out.

Winmore is going up in Carrboro but that is mixed use...

I don't know of any "cookie cutter" developments in Chapel Hill

I was referring to Southern Village, Meadowmont, Lake Hogan Farms, and the developments on both sides of MLK up near weaver dairy (don't know the names, but they are obvious from the road).
