Depending on the part of the country they are from, Ubers are very cheap here in the Triangle area. Things I'd recommend if there is a day and the graduation is at Duke:
1. Go to the Duke Church
2. Eat at a BBQ place. If you are in Durham, I suggest Q-Shack
3. Walk around Sarah P Duke Gardens
4. Celebrate with Donuts at Monuts (could be a nice breakfast? or after an early lunch dessert)
5. Have a coffee at Cocoa Cinnamon or at Motorco
Are they looking more for "fun things to do", or are any of them scoping out the area to live in? That would make a big difference. Presuming they are just visiting, Duke would be cool, but have a backup plan if it rains that day. Do you know anything about their interests?
It's strictly a visit. I don't think any of them plan to live here. We know a little about what they want to do. If it rains, Greensboro could be an option. Lunch at Green Valley Grill and the Civil Rights Museum. All inside.
My partner and I are hosting four young women who will be graduating soon. They visit end of May. Turns out they are only staying for one day in between some other traveling they have planned. My partner is friends with one of the mothers which is why they're visiting Raleigh.
What day of the week? As a non-resident, I really liked the vibe of the Food Truck Rodeo on Sundays.
Yes, there is a jazz club in Raleigh...and a great one: C Grace. http://www.cgracebar.com a very retro vibe, great music and great drinks. If it happens to be Sat night the 9th that they are here, Al Strong and his band are very very good.
Then, if you decide to leave them there to Uber home, they will be right in Glenwood South....where most 20 somethings want to go at night.
Duke gardens, West Campus, and Nasher is a good idea. Nasher has a cafe where you could have lunch but I would take them to Mateo downtown. Very hard to get into for dinner but not so for lunch and much cheaper. A really beautiful space. Grabbing a beer or cocktail at the 6th-floor rooftop bar of the Durham Hotel is also great for beautiful views of downtown Durham.
