I don't think that's true. There are plenty of muscle bound guys and girls in my gym using machines as well as free weights. I do both. I'm not this huge weight lifter but I like lifting as a tool to lose fat and build muscle over any other kind of exercise. I do cardio as well but that's only a 1/4 of my time after I finish lifting.

What do you do at the gym? Are you mostly strength training, cardio?

I use mostly dumbbells for arm and chest and while I agree the Smith machines suck compared to a regular squat rack I use it for legs because that is what they have (for $10 1/4 mile from my house I can't complain). I also use the pull up bar thing and benches for abs as well. During the spring and fall I run outside, during the winter and summers I normally use the treadmill.

My schedule is gym-run-off-gym-run-off-gym etc etc although sometimes work interferes. Lost 50 lbs, BMI is ~21.4. Whatever you do just break a sweat, and the fat comes off.
