Apex is the only town I can think of like that...at least in Wake County. I'm not as familiar with Wake Forest but I've heard they have something similar to that as well.

I like Hillsborough's downtown best for history. Chapel Hill's downtown is great if you like restaurants & bars (and there's lots of young people thanks to UNC). Durham's downtown is great if you want to catch a baseball game or see something at the Carolina Theater (there are some great restaurants there, too). Raleigh's downtown is working on improving, but I think there are other areas that are better (Glenwood South, for example).

Basically, I like all of these towns for their own unique reasons. They're all cool in their own ways.

thanks everybody. I am just looking to see what this area has to offer. I had heard some bad things about durham but saw some pictures of it online and figured that it must have some nice parts! it's good to hear about these smaller towns too.

Default Love Durham's downtown

In Durham, not just around Duke, you can catch an art gallery showing, go to dinner, see a baseball game, or go to the Carolina Theater for lots of stuff - movies, forums, dance shows, comedy, you name it. There are also lots of outdoor things that happen at different times of year. Centerfest (art), the Farmer's Market or Bimbe Festival (summer) are all great options. There are lots of cute little shopping places that are local around 9th street, Brightleaf and Main St.

The lofts that are filling up with new residents and the condos in the downtown area are also bringing more traffic so hopefully the dining and shopping options can only increase.
When I go to work, I eat, work out at the YMCA and visit friends for coffee all within walking distance of my office. I can run copies, go to the post office and handle any business as well within walking distance.

Hope this helps give you a sense for Durham's downtown.
