The problem with hot dog joints in the Triangle is that they use cheap, low-quality weiners. Not so at The Pig in Chapel Hill. Their weiners are homemade with high-quality locally raised meat. The casings snap when you bite into it. You can get them either at The Pig or at the Carrboro Farmers Market. Weaver Street Market sells their weiners in packages you can cook at home.
don't talk about our red dogs
... but yeah consistency is horrible on red dogs... tastes like mush. If Snoopy's can have a thriving business here, then that tells you all you need to know.
PS z I sincerely wish we had Chicago beef sandwiches here. Last trip back to Phoenix, DH ate at one if the TWO Portillo's three times in ten days. (I accompanied him twice.)
Rosati's in Wake Forest and Morrisville (I prefer the WF one) have good Italian Beef. One of the things I look forward to when we're all home for the Holidays is Mom gets the big tub of Portillo's Italian beef and leaves it on the stove for the family members as we arrive in at different times.
Believe it or not, I like Steak n Shake's Chicago style dog.
Take57, I can locally solve at least one of your sourcing issues. World Market stocks sport peppers (nearby the hot gardeniera).
I'm positive I've seen neon relish very recently, but I can't remember exactly where. But I'm gonna guess it was either World Market or Southern Seasons.

Good to know.
Fortunately my location signature is similar to yours (multiple location wise) and the Scottsdale Portillo's is about 5 minutes away from my place when I'm at down there if I need a fix (and like you've indicated on prior posts, their real gift to mankind are the Italian Beef's... at least until Al's opens up a shop in the desert )
