The better article on the water crisis was in the Independent a few weeks ago. Independent Weekly: Thirsty? Dirty? Sorry.

However, if they don't start talking about their developing strategies and we still don't get rain, people will be left to their own immaginations.

I'm not so sure our city and state leaders AREN'T twiddling their thumbs on this issue. The current emergency plan is for citizens to buy bottled water (which as MrsSteel astutely points out, Pepsi is bottling from our own sources and selling back to us...) From the indy's article: "the state has stockpiled just 50,000 gallons of water in two warehouses. That will cover just one quarter of the population of Durham. For one day."

The article also points out that Bill Bell was taking the oath of office back in December 2001, Durham was 17 days away from running out of water, yet said in January of this year, that no one could have predicted a drought this severe.

They ARE twiddling their thumbs, and no one has any serious ideas of what to do if the water runs out (props to Orange County, though, whose leaders seem to be better positioned to address a water emergency)

That is confusing a supply/demand issue in a local reservoir with a drought. THIS drought is by far the worst drought this area has ever seen in my lifetime. That is as true in Cary, which has a large supply, as it is in Raleigh and Durham, which do not.

I can see it now... we'll have a gang war fighting in the streets of Cary to take over water supplies, as those in the county with wells have to sit on the porch with a shotgun to keep out the poachers.

N&O newsobserver.com | As water levels sink, houses to rise (http://www.newsobserver.com/weather/drought/story/954279.html - broken link)
'Mayor Charles Meeker asked Tuesday for a staff report on the moratorium proposal before the council's March 4 meeting. But the mayor has already said he opposes a moratorium.'

What do you suppose is the REAL reason he is opposing the Moratorium?
