This is my first time posting a question on City-Data, but have been a long time reader.
So this might be a stupid question, but hey there are no stupid questions, right?
I'm new to the Raleigh area and the South in general. I recently took up shooting and I love it. I have a lot to learn, but that's OK because I really enjoy shooting.
So my possibly stupid question is....
Is there an outdoor range in or around the Raleigh area, where I can shoot targets such as gallons of water, cinderblocks, watermelons, bottles, cans, old computer monitor , old T.V. and other similar items?
I know shooting is all about safety first and some of the above mentioned can be dangerous, but is there a range that will allow this or something close?
I know that if you have a lot of private property you can do this, but I do not happen to have this type of property. Common sense tells me that no range will allow this for liability reasons, so can anyone recommend the next best legal thing?
The Wake County Range is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Range is also open on Saturdays from noon–6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
$10 per hour per lane, targets and ammo sold if needed.
OK to bring own targets, including laminated ones
Open to public on Tue-Thur Fri, 6-9 PM
Sat: 12-6
Sun: 1-6
The Range Orientation Class is required to obtain a Range Card and to use the range.
Firearms are not required during orientation. The class takes 1.5 to 2 hours and covers safety, range procedures and a tour of the facility.
Class Cost: Wake County Resident – $15; Non-Wake County Resident – $25
After completion of class, you get $2.00 off per lane rental, for 5 times.
Lanes can be shared by two shooters
For questions, please contact RSM_WCSO@wakegov.com or 919-303-0851 (during public range hours; otherwise, please leave a message).
At the Wake County Firearm Training center range in Holly Springs you will not be able to shoot at any of those items. You may bring your own paper targets.
No one will let you do that cause it makes a giant mess and is kind of juvenile. Drakes used to have metal targets, we would also bring our own mild steel plates and never had an issue doing that. Haven't been there in YEARS now

Thanks in advance!!!
Avent Ferry road in Holly Spring brings you to the boat ramp on Harris Lake. Then turns to a dirt road. The end of the road is a pile of dirt. This is game lands but I do not know if it is legal. I too frown on making a mess. I am a tree hugger.
Anyone who owns land and will allow you to shoot will likely not be very happy with trash, electronics, etc being shattered. The watermelons and water jugs probably isn't a big deal if you clean it up. You're better off going to one of the NC public ranges like at Uwharrie, etc and just shooting paper.

Ahhhhh...
It is enough to make one miss the old strip mines in NW Pennsylvania.
Plenty of other folks' junk tossed over highwalls to shoot up.

This is the most convenient solution. But, you are limited to paper type targets. Caswell Shooting range is a bit of a drive but may let you shoot cinderblocks and watermelons. Nothing with glass, though.

I shot a pumpkin in a strip mine from 250 yards with a 30.06 once. It was glorious.
Propane tanks and aerosol cans can be quite gratifying, too.
Yanno, deer don't run around with bullesyes on them... LOL
It starts young. When I was about 7, the neighbor teenagers blew up a potato with a couple of firecrackers. A regular Manhattan Project right in the front yard!
