Hey, if you don't mind sharing I'm curious what others have paid to have their water heaters replaced. I'm particularly interested to hear from those who have their unit in the attic and had it replaced there. Quote I got was $1,600. 40 gallon water heater replacement / hooked up to gas. Going to take a little extra work getting new unit in attic due to small entry so some removal of molding etc is involved.
And yes, I would totally go tankless but the price is out of my range right now and we will likely be selling in the next year or so.
And yes.... I despise having a water heater in my attic, but it is are only option right now.
I just paid $850 to remove and replace a 30 gal. electric lowboy water heater at the beach. I had a 50 gal. gas water heater removed and replace at home 3 years ago...$1,200. Both not in the attic or crawl space.
Well I bought by gas 40 gall replacement from a plumbers supply on Yonkers Road last year for $450. A VERY hard 4 hours work had it installed with sharkbite push fittings. Went with like-for-like replacement to make thing easier for me. It was in the attic. I had been quoted about $2k 8 years ago by ARS for the same job. I think I probably saved myself the $2k for 4 hours work. It wasn't that difficult, undo gas line , cut off water pipes, reconnect with sharkbite, reconnect gas line, check for leaks, fire it up!

You said it was a very hard 4 hours work, then said it wasn't that difficult, sounds like you have mixed emotions about the ordeal!
Paid 600 3 years ago for a 50 gallon, 9yr warranty gas one at home depot. It was in basement, so replacing it was easy, I already had a crimper from my basement finish out. Hardest part was cleaning up the couple hundred gallons of water which had leaked out of the old one before we found out it was leaking. Also discovered the main water shutoff doesn't completely shut the water off.
Town of Cary charged $10 for me to dispose of the old one. Only downside was that since it was an emergency situation, I couldn't buy a 12 yr water heater, had to get a 8yr as that was the only model they had in stock (and it was new years day).

I understood it to mean that it was physically hard work (hauling heater to attic and old one out) but not necessarily complicated work. Make 2 water connections and a gas connection, can be done without a bunch of tools and no torches required.
These days, prices seem to be all over the map. It wasn't long ago when you could have them replaced for $500-$600 all day long. Those days appear to be gone and as of June last year, the federal government made some changes which increased the cost of the units. I would get multiple quotes and not necessarily from the large, high overhead outfits. I would make certain that the proper permits are obtained as an improper installation is a potential safety hazard (and I see them all the time). If it is an older installation, the chances are you don't have the expansion tank that is required on most installations-another expense.
Had our gas one replaced same day 5 years ago by our plumber, think he charged me $950, but he is my neighbor so he knows pretty much every time he drives by he's getting business from us lol.
