Hi,

does anyone know what snake is this? It was on the side walk and found it yesterday evening when I was taking my kids for bike ride.

Looks like maybe a young rat snake. At any rate it's non-venomous and best left alone to go do its thing.

Check Snakes of North Carolina for nice pix of all NC snakes.

Here are some better pictures of juveline rat snakes: http://www.virginiaherpetologicalsoc...of-concern.htm

What do you think? Is that it?

Thank you. It was helpful. I left the snake where it was and moved out of it's way, and let it live

The only venomous snake that we really have to worry about in the Triangle is the copperhead and that ain't one of those, so he's a good guy.

The mountains and the coastal plain have rattlers. And there are water moccasins/cottonmouths on the southern and eastern edges of the triangle, but they'd be in or near the water.

If you see a snake in your neighborhood and it's not a copperhead it's okay. Copperheads are tan and brown with a coppery head. They look just like fall leaves — it's fantastic camouflage. Any grey, black, green snake — no worries.

The snake in the original post is an immature Black Racer.

I believe it to be an immature black rat snake or racer. They turn dark as they age. Do no harm.

There is also an app for your phone - similar to the website.

Just another reference you may want to keep handy (and it is free).

As others said, leave it be. If nothing else those smaller snakes help with keeping creepy-crawly bugs & small rodents in check
