Any suggestions for kitchen remodels in the triangle? I am looking to replace my 13x9.3 kitchen completely. I live in Cary.

Default I can highly recommend...

Joel Storie 919-422-7642. I am wary of recommending vendors as some do great work one day and then go spacy the next, but this one is really good and reliable. A good remodeler will not necessarily cost much more than if you subbed the work out yourself because they get discounts and know the people who do good work for reasonable $.
If you are just replacing items that will fill the same space as the items you now have (flooring, cabinets, lighting, fixtures all in the same place) you will not need permits, but be sure to discuss this with whomever you choose. Permits are important and protect you!

Do you know if this guy does cabinet refinishing? We have nice maple cabinets, but my wife doesn't like the finish.

We do not want new cabinets. We do not want new doors put on and laminate applied to the outer surfaces. We want the doors and cabinets stripped and restained.

If you are looking for granite counter tops, I recommend the Countertop Company in Raleigh. They did great work and were the cheapest I could find per square foot. They even threw in a free sink after they accidentally lost the cardboard sink template that I sent to them. I didn't ask for it - they just offered so they could get it in on time! Great Service!

Having granite countertops would be a plus, but installing new cabinets, sink, granite countertops and appliances might cost me atleast $20,000. Maybe even this figure is very optimistic.

Default Let me clarify...

that Joel is a general contractor that plans the work, lines up subcontractors (subs), gets permits, etc. A GC is very beneficial for any job that requires multiple specialties and/or structural work. If you are only changing surfaces and fixtures with nothing structural or mechanical, you probably do not need a GC. There are a number of cabinet refinishers in the area. I have used Mumford 919-870-8060.

House Lady, What exactly does a cabinet refinisher do?

I am looking for someone to replace laminate countertops -- I have some cabinets that are quite cheap but they are in decent condition, I may want to just have them painted. Do you have any referrals?

You'd be suprised. We stripped out the old kitchen, moved a door, installed new cabinets and lighting, and put in new appliances and granite countertops for about $13,000, including labor. Dimensions of our kitchen were 16x8, something around 50 sq ft of counterspace. We also donated all the old cabinets, countertops and appliances to habitat for humanity (valued at $2000), so we're getting $500 back on our taxes.

Rough estimates on costs
Cabinets from Ikea...3000
Stainless appliances from Sears (Dishwasher, Microwave, Fridge, Stove)...2100
Countertop and sink from Design Surfaces...2500
Labor...5500 (includes moving door, driving up to Ikea to pick up cabinets, drywall, hooking up appliances including propane for stove, new wiring and hanging lights)

We're really happy with it (not quite finished in these pics), and feel like we got alot of bang for our buck.
