Again, don't know from the chart if we did add the second most tech jobs - only the percentage increase in tech jobs over the last 5 years. If we had 1 tech job to begin with, adding 2 would put us at #1 on the list for sure!

North Carolina was 14th for the total number of tech workers in 2014, but the growth we're talking about means that rank is going to change rapidly.

If you go back to the article they based their chart on, it's clear that Raleigh is nowhere near #2 in number of tech jobs. The city is not nearly big enough to hold that spot. The map doesn't show a great breakdown on actual number of jobs, but, of course, many of the bigger cities have many more tech jobs than Raleigh has - NY, Boston, DC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, etc. What's amazing is that the area with the greatest number of tech jobs - San Fran - at over 500K tech jobs also had the biggest percentage increase, by a wide margin.

While it's not entirely clear, it does appear that "Raleigh" includes Durham as well, as that's the way they show it on the map. And San. Fran. includes its adjacent cities, as well.

A lot of people would love to have rent that low. It's all perspective. The "low" rents in the Triangle are actually one of the draws for talent from more expensive markets.

Agree rents are 'low' compared to many areas but I don't think any techie is going to find a place they would want to live for $908 a month in the Triangle these days.

That's not even remotely what that chart says.

The chart simply lists percentages where the numerator is [# of jobs in 2015 minus # of jobs in 2010] and the denominator is [# of jobs in 2010]. It has no indication of what the numerator or denominator are for any of the cities. More importantly, the denominator is different for every city, making a comparison of the percentages practically meaningless.

Well, it's not completely meaningless. While I totally agree that the chart is based on growth, not total jobs, the context matters as well and a variety of data points need to be considered.
The NYT graphic does a much better job of putting it all into context. In their graphic it's easy to see that The Triangle has a healthy quantity of tech jobs relative to its size with its "dot" being the same size or larger than metros with many more people. Clearly, the Triangle does not have as many tech jobs as the Bay Area or other metros that are triple the population. That said, strong % growth on a strong base of jobs is nothing to sneeze at and, given the context of a smaller population base, is one of the reasons for the Triangle's rapidly growing population.

In reality, this is not the case specially in IT. I know people who had been in between jobs for extended periond of time somewhere 3-6 months. These people I know are highly skilled professionals. If you loose a job it is not so easy to get another good job here.
