Does anyone know of a Tae Kwon Do place in Raleigh or Wake Forest that does a once or twice a week lesson rather than a monthly membership with a 6 month minimum? Our son loves Lee Brothers for camps but their prices are ridiculous and they expect them there almost daily. We can't make that with our other commitments but would love to find a lesson that's once a week. Any leads would be appreciated!
A typical business model for TKD schools relies heavily on promotion exam fees or "belt fees"... and those are maximized by having kids there all the time.

I know and certainly get that but approx. $180/mo for something we could make once a week is not cost effective. I also don't want to pigeon hole a 6 year old into just one sport when he's still exploring what he does and does not like. I also don't want 6 months of commitment in case he decides not to do it any more.
I'm not sure I would group martial arts into a sports category. Any martial arts including Korean-founded Taekwondo is going to be structured and disciplined which requires commitment from the student and parents. Martial art schools provide introductory classes to allow a student time to decide if the art is a good fit for them and if they are a good fit for the art. One of the disciplines of the art includes teaching the student what it means to make such a commitment, encouraging the student to adhere to the commitment, and having the parent be disciplined enough to not allow the child to talk their way out of the commitment which only teaches the child it's okay to quit and fail yourself.
If you child enjoys the classes at Lee brothers I suggest signing up for a year. You don't have to go everyday to be successful. My child trains at Master Chang's on Strickland. I visited several schools and found Master Chang's to be a lot more fun for children so I would stop by if you haven't already. I know Master Chang's have introductory classes as well.
Try the Parks & Rec department. In Orange County and Chapel Hill they have TKD at the Parks & Rec that meets 1x or 2x per week. No contract and much cheaper. We did this for the past 4 years.
I have also been a member of several TKD schools that operate on the more common model of monthly membership fees, and $170 per month seems like a lot. I am used to paying more around $100 per month for this, which is what we will pay at the new school we are starting at in Hillsborough. Unless TKD just costs a lot more in Wake County - I have only gone to schools in Durham, Orange, and Alamance Counties.
I did some research and the city of raleigh has lessons for $40 once a week. Thought this may be helpful to someone else reading this post.
Even $100/mo was a bit high for us given the other activities we do and the frequency we could make it. I definitely understand commitment and want him to be committed but I also want to raise a well rounded child. Our rule is if you start something you finish it and you make it to all of the practices/games/performances unless there's an exceptional reason not to. We currently do soccer, acting, choir and swimming but throughout the year also do basketball, tennis, art, etc at other times and I don't want to have him do more than 1 activity a day in addition to school. That was my logic behind once a week as opposed to 3-4 times a week or more.
