If you're not going to cut directly on it the Watco butcher block stuff is excellent.

Thanks for all the great replies everyone. I've seen some at IKEA that I like, but the shipping is expensive, as it is with other online sellers. That's why I was hoping to get it local. Maybe now is a good time to learn some work working skills.

Easy day trip to IKEA if you've got a big enough vehicle. It's on the east side of Charlotte. I've done it several times.
