Imagine, nearly $200K to paint silly marks on roads!
=======================================

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 15, 2016

Cary to Add Bike Sharrows on 14 Miles of Streets

Weather permitting and as part of its Bicycle Safety Improvement Plan, the Town of Cary will add bike "sharrows" on 14 miles of its streets. The work will begin September 19, continue in phases through winter 2017 and occur Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in locations throughout town.
Sharrows are street pavement markings that indicate shared use, encourage the safe passing of bicyclists by motorists and reduce the incidence of wrong-way cycling. Sharrows also help bicyclists with positioning in a shared travel lane or in lanes too narrow for a motor vehicle and bicycle to travel safely side by side in the same lane.
The first phase from September 19 through end-October will include the following streets:
• High House Road from Carpenter Upchurch Road to West Chatham Street
• Evans Road from NW Cary Parkway to NW Maynard Road
• SE Maynard Road from Kildaire Farm Road to Walnut Street
• West Chatham Street from Old Apex Road to West Park Street

Crews working on behalf of the Town will periodically close lanes or use a slow moving operation at each location to ensure safety. Funding for this project was approved by Cary voters as part of the 2012 Community Investment Bonds referendum. Approximately $198,457 was appropriated for the sharrows. For more, search “Bicycle Plan” at www.townofcary.org.

I know what sharrows are and I don't think it's just "silly marks on roads" when they're helpful in increasing safety. Not as good as separate bike lanes but it's a start. Also, $200k is peanuts for anything that has to do with road work.

They are very common in bike friendly cities all over the place. Wait for the boxes they put in front of traffic lights that are for bikes only like these, fun stuff. Bike Boxes - National Association of City Transportation Officials

I think it's a proper use of the funds.

They painted these in our old neighborhood. While a good reminder they sure as hell didn't slow down the people speeding 60mph down a 25mph street (which was a cut through).

As they become more common, people will become more used to them and hopefully they will become more effective. Agree, $200K for roadwork is a drop in the bucket.

I'm mixed about sharrows - they're a good reminder that bikes can be on the roads but run the risk of getting a message to drivers that bikes can only be on certain roads.

annabanana, don't think it's supposed to be a traffic calming device - just a reminder that bicyclists can position themselves in a certain way in the middle of the road/lane if they feel it's safe.

Agreed $200K is a drop in the bucket for transportation projects.
