Likely, but hopefully short duration gasoline price hike / shortage coming (school, buses)

I agree that this problem has been exacerbated by people panicking. I just spoke to my friend who owns a gas station in Raleigh. He sold more gas by noon today than the station usually sells in an entire week.

That's not planning. That's panic buying.
Do you realize that most stations were out of gas, so they went to the few stations that still had gas ??

If stations weren't already out over the weekend, this would hold more water.
It's common sense folks. Increasing demand for gas in a shortage makes things worse. When hundreds of thousands buy gas they wouldn't have normally bought, that increases demand. You can call self-serving behavior planning if you want, but these actions are to blame for the problem. The point isn't that individuals made bad decisions, but rather we all are caught up in a panic. As others have said, maybe not so eloquently, ignoring the panic doesn't stop it, it just means you run out of gas.
Nonetheless, self-serving behavior is to be expected, which is why the price of gas should have gone up to $5/gallon and people would have declined to hoard gas knowing the price would return to $2 in a couple weeks. But alas, anti-gouging laws are good politics and the gas companies are scapegoated for shortages and long lines.

Reason: ?
Filled up last night for $2.06....extremely glad I did. Though even I admit to being "part of the problem". It is definitely a self-perpetuated shortage in that the panic and "gas run" that the hype from the news brought on had much worse affect than the actual shortage itself would have.
This is non issue unless you can't work from home or really need to go out (emergency). Life will go on and the pipe will be fixed Friday. You will never remember this little blip in your life. One week in the house, no big deal there is nothing you can do. Ask a friend, neighbor or Uber if you really need to go out and don't have gas. Hopefully this will reduce traffic for a week.

Apparently chellemi808 hasn't read this entire thread where someone posted about filling all 4 cars they owned, their boat that they don't intend to use anymore this season, their riding lawn mower and 4 six-gallon gas cans. I've also seen people posting about it doing similar things on FB.
