I don't plan on replacing the battery in our Leaf. It's a 2013 and we've seen no degradation in range in the 2 years and 20,000+ miles we've had it. I put about 70+ miles a day on it. We may replace it in a few years with a newer used EV.
The Leaf is a hatch and you can put a lot of stuff in it. Seats 5. We do have the Honda Oddity, too, but if we didn't and needed to haul something large we could rent a truck. There are many weeks when we don't drive the Oddity at all. We got a deal on it used, too.
After getting burned on a trade-in years ago I never expect much. KBB estimates $7500 for a trade-in and $9500 for a private party sale, so that would be $5500-$3500 for 2 years worth of use so far. That's not bad in my book. We do have an L2 charger in the garage and plug it in every night just like a phone. That ran about $500 I think? I have had it inspected and the tires rotated, but that's it for expenditures.
It's really a great car. I encourage everybody who's looking to buy a vehicle to go take a test drive in an EV. You might be surprised how fun they are to drive.
Yeah. We are fans of not adding to the air pollution.
We love the Volt, btw. They're really fun cars to drive.
I ended up with a Volt as a rental car last year. Unfortunately, the battery wasn't fully charged when I got it, and there were no charging stations around so it ran mostly on gas.
It was a nice car - it drove much better than I expected. That said, I wouldn't buy an electric car yet. Not worth the price yet, imo.

You bought a USED Leaf. Your depreciation isn't really that valid. You got the vast majority of the depreciation accounted for in your purchase...
Imagine being the person/entity that bought it NEW (there would be no used Leafs if none sold new) for $25k+ after subsidy and now it's worth $9-$10k. Raleigh CL has a bunch of 2013 and 2014 Leafs for $8900--$9900! That is a deprecation rate of $7500/yr on those 2014s!!!
Yes, I realize they were leased and Nissan lost a ton on those leases. In most cars, the market sets the residual value and that is the basis of the lease price. A higher residual value means a lower lease rate, which is why on Toyotas and Hondas the lease rates are so ridiculously low. EV's aren't involved in real world pricing currently.
As far as replacing the battery goes, the market will price that in if you don't do it and go to sell/trade it.
One very bad thing with EV's as used cars is the sword of Damocles over your head when the warranty on the EV components ends.
Although there are a few shops that can service a battery, most other components are frighteningly expensive with dealer parts and special technicians.
If you browse the Prius on ebay, you will probably see many Prius vehicles that were totaled with damage you'd never expect to be fatal.
I'd be very uneasy buying a used EV beyond warranty.
I keep hearing all the small outlying towns are all dry. No problems in Raleigh that I've seen yet. Unless there was a crazy run this evening.
There were several on Capital this morning with bags over the pump handles and no numbers on the pricing sign. A neighbor called about an hour ago and said there was no gas in Granville co.
Just filled up at Handy Hugo's, corner of Cary Parkway and Old Apex Road.
No lines, but the pumps are busy.
Still $2.119 for regular.
Filled up there last night- it was $2.09 around 8:30pm.
