Coming out for a visit soon and since we eat organic, would like to know if there are any sources of LOCAL organic food in Chapel Hill - mainly fruits (for snacks while we are there), but will also be bringing fixings for dinner with friends - chicken or beef and veggies plus salad one night.

Organic's good, but would prefer locally grown organic. And antibiotic-free meat/poultry.

Weaver Street Market in Carrboro

From Weaver Street Market's website:
Quote:
Weaver Street refuses to carry products that are harmful to our health, society, or environment. These include tobacco products, meat produced with antibiotics and growth hormones, endangered seafood, food with harmful additives including trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. It’s important for us to make a statement about these products by refusing to stock them

Yeah, Weaver Street in Carrboro is your best bet, but if you're here on the weekend the Chapel Hill Farmer's Market at University Place (Mall) is good in Chapel Hill. Carrboro Farmer's Market (Sat & Weds) is da bomb also.

We also gots the Whole Foods and Trader Joes in Chapel Hill so you won't be short of food.

I'd hazard a guess that the organic/local food scene here is at least as good as, if not better than, Charleston's. I know Charleston has AMAZING food, but we've got more hippies here.

Ha ha. I may be wrong, but I have thought the Chapel Hill/Carrboro food scene might have a "healthier" leaning than Charleston.

I don't know — we've got plenty of rich food here, too. Biscuits. Doughnuts. But you can find local tempeh, too, if you want.

Since I am on a medically restricted diet, I am a big fan of farm-to-table food with little "doctoring" since I have to eat "clean" - no sauces, few ingredients, etc.

Sadly, hard to find a lot of the time...

Earth Fare, in Raleigh and Morrisville, has great vegetables. I find it less expensive than Whole Foods, and more pleasant to shop in. (The people who work there always seem to be in good cheer). There are also the farmers' markets, like the one in Fearrington Village on Tuesday afternoons -- lots of local, organic produce.

Thanks! How is the Weaver Street Market in Chapel Hill - I think it's at Southern Village?

It's a smaller version of the original one in Carrboro and the one in Hillsborough. But it should have everything you need.

Trader Joe's has a few fresh organic foods but's definitely not local. I'd skip it. We also have a Fresh Market-- a better option that Trader Joe's. Chapel Hill farmers market also has a market on Tuesday afternoons from 3-6PM. Carrboro farmers market also has a market on Wednesday afternoon from 3-6PM. Southern Village has a farmers market on Thursdays from 3:30-6:30PM. These weekday markets are smaller than the Saturday morning markets but still offer plenty of choices.

Trust me, you will not any problem finding organic and local food around here.
