If that was a departure today, it's a coin toss if you get into the D.C. area before the rush hour is in full bloom. It's still not horrible (relative to D.C. traffic) heading north during their rush, it's just that one small problem can cripple your drive. My play would be to treat the first 240 miles like a NASCAR race and only stop once, at a location immediately off the highway, where all passengers run into/out of the restrooms while the driver tops off the tank and then get right back to the drive.
Good luck and when in unbearable traffic, don't fight it - get off someplace and get out of the car until it settles down a bit.
LOLOL "like a Nascar race"...yes good idea.
We have left here at all hours of the day and night and in all kinds of weather....the whole thing is a crapshoot. Leave when you want/can, don't overthink it, hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
Tossing it out there that I found reasonable somewhat last-minute airfare (four days before flight) by flying from Greensboro to La Guardia on American. Flight was $249 RT.
Greensboro is not an option I knew to consider before reading that
good for me as they have flights to EWR, SWF and HPN, although the last 2 are double the cost
Yup, I happened upon it by chance when I was searching google flights - had to go up and see an ill family member. LGA is not ideal transportation-wise, but you can get to NJ from there in case that's the cheapest. The price from RDU was way too high at that late date but I was really happy with the Greensboro flight. Totally hassle free, just a very small plane.
Amtrak is so relaxing, and you get to keep yours shoes on.
Bring a GPS, and you'll see 100+ MPH NE of DC!
