Ausmerica, only registered users of that site can read the article. Could you please tell us what it says? What did the students do? What is the school doing in response?

It says the copied the school's master key to get access to test answers etc. Wow, things have changed since the advent of computers. Our cheating in high school was relegated to the guy that steals the teacher's edition of the book or the answer sheet to a test. Sad, but thats a big problem in competitive school districts. Colleges ultimately look for grades/GPA, and some students feel cheating is the only way to excel?!

My daughter says cheating is rampant at her high school, and she doesn't understand why the teachers don't do more than say, "I see wandering eyes."

I can answer that. Cheating is very difficult to prove. Parents fight tooth and nail against any charge of cheating. Teachers generally "lose." Enough times of going through that, and you realize it's not a battle worth fighting.

What I gathered is that this is more serious than the usual, in that it has been found to be a "ring" and has been going on for at least 2 years that they know of. They have discovered some of the students involved, but are still investigating who else is involved. Moreoever, someone had access to the test keys, was coping them (and I can't recall) and either was "handing" out or selling to students, but in either case not good. Cellphones with cameras and text messaging were used to pass along the answers as well. Again, from what I gathered, UNC has also rescinded early admission to 6 of the students found to be involved, with more to possibly follow (more universities? more students? don't know). Yes, cheating happens but this is being taken much more seriously because of the ring.

It does sound like this was a little more than a case of wandering eyes. It was a pretty well organized ring of students. Evidently they even went into the school at night with a master key to search though teacher's offices and find answer keys for tests.
Sad....
