lol. this whole thread goes right over my head, but i gotta say: i'm glad im moving to raleigh in 2009, not 1989. and, i'm glad i'm young, because i remember 1989, but just barely, and everything was like that wherever you lived.... sizzler, sketchy movie theaters, small places that are now starbucks-ridden urban/suburban hybrids. remembering back makes me feel like i'm watching an 80s movie that i haven't watched since the 80s... weeeeeird....

Yeah. I remember how everyone in school would complain about how boring it was to live here. We live here b/c its close enough to places we can get away too...which I always found funny. It is amazing how things have changed...for better and for worse.

I live in Cary now, and I ain't from out of town anymore.

Okay...where was this guy living....under a rock??? While Cary wasn't anything near what it is today, it certainly wasn't some far away place in 1981. Had he told you he was from Clayton or Benson, now that would have seemed a little less ridiculous in 1981.

When we moved here in 1984, Cary did have somewhat of a "far away" from things feel to it. Our realtor steered my parents to North Raleigh. I often wonder how different our lives would have been had they bought in Cary.

Default you know you are from raleigh if

you remember
when the original char grill opened and closed
when there was baseball at devreoux meadows on peace street
when you could drive up to the single runway at rdu and watch the planes
when you could dove hunt at dorthea dix hospital
when you could go to the forest or the tower drive in movies
when you could eat seafood at the sea horse restaurant on capital blvd
when chips hamburger restaurant was on new bern ave ( 15 cent burgers)
when wkix am radio signed off at midnight with the dj named charlie brown
city limits were: hillsborough x blue ridge, capital x the beltline (before there was a beltline), newbern ave x wake med, south wilmington x south saunders

Where was the original Char Grill that opened and closed?

Everytime I pass by what was Deveraux Meadows, I sigh. Living nearby it would be cool if we had a minor league team playing there. Anything would be better than the Sanitation garage.

What was that area around Peace like back then?

First of all, who remembers when the ITB section of Capital was named "Downtown Blvd" and the rest of it was named "North Blvd"? :-)

I remember playing soccer on the remnants of that field in the mid 70s. Turning that field into the sanitation center was the WORST thing that could have been done to that piece of property and the immediate neighborhood.

In addition to relocating the sanitation trucks, I think that Capital's "limited access" nature should be re-worked south of the Wade Ave. intersection to allow more access and slower traffic to unify the East and West side neighborhoods. Downtown's reach and development is very strong on this side of town and the urban development should be encouraged. The road can stay wide and new intersection traffic signals can be timed to allow flow like they are downtown. I think Capital Blvd's limited access and "one way" nature (thanks to the NJ barriers)inhibits positive development.

I think it would be really terrific if Capital was tunnelled under Peace for a few blocks. That would really open up the neighborhood to all sorts of options. I am not thinking on the scale of Boston's big dig but more like the tunnel on US-1 in Ft Lauderdale as it goes under the las Olas area of downtown. It allows for both through traffic with a more walkable urban area above it.
