I was browsing through my annuals from State and found the evidence of the Gateway I remember. I was wrong about it maybe closing due to a fire. On page 32 of the 1976 Agromeck, there is a drawing referring to it, and other businesses on that block that were forced to close by higher rental fees. That was December 1, 1975.

In the drawing, if you look closely above the doorway of the "shootway" restaurant, you can see Gateway crossed through. You have to zoom in quite a bit to read it, but it's there.
Sadlack's is gone now...demolished for redevelopment. Word is they will reopen...still waiting on when and where. Sadlack's "Super Sprout" is still my favorite sandwich.
I read last year that they were relocating to the Berkeley Cafe downtown, i.e., the Berkeley would be selling Sadlack's sandwiches. Don't know if that's actually the case.

I can spot the back right corner of my lot in photo #1. Thanks for posting them.
Before the old North Hills my grandmother used to sit with a elderly woman that lived on a farm close to the location. The house sat off the road at or about the intersection of Six Forks and Northbrook. I remember the red dusty fields around the area at that time.
You know you're from Raleigh if DC is as far north as you've ever traveled (it's so true, though).
Been to New York City twice. Once 1976 for a wedding...and in 1956. Saw Willie Mayes and the Giants play in the old Polo Grounds...and "I don't care if I never get back"
I used to walk there from my (rental) house in the early 90's. I miss them too!
