We have visited the Raleigh area a few times and are thinking of relocating to the area and or Eastern NC. Looking to be within an hour or so driving distance of Garner.
We are looking mostly in Clayton at the present time but it seems evident that building boom will be present there for years to come and it may be tougher to find what we want there
Would prefer a lot/home with no restrictions with 3/4 acre+, quiet, can be more agricultural than neighborhood development. Looking for a place where we could set up a larger garden and have a few chickens etc without restrictions.
The types of areas we are looking for are getting tougher to find as the building/sprawl around Raleigh continues.
Hoping to get some direction from those that are local to the Raleigh/Garner/Clayton areas.
Asheville area is a second choice for us but at the present time are leaning toward Raleigh area
......
In and around the the Garner area, are there better or better priced areas to look for a home to do small scale homesteading.
Garner encompases a large area which has the rural acreage you are looking for. There are currently 15 homes with a Garner address which have no HOA and 1 or more acres. If you extend the search into Willows Springs, Powhatan,Wilsons Mills, etc you will find more. Benson also has some piece of clear, flat, agriculture land in the 4-6 acre range.

I've never looked for a home remotely like what you describe - not what we want. But I'm wondering if Zebulon might be worth a look. I think it's about 1/2 hour from Garner.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. We have researched all the town suggested. Although Zebulon has the acreage we are looking for an area that has decent middle and high schools. Many of the lots/homes in the areas suggested have HOA fees and restrictions. Would prefer to find a home/lot without those.
I'm thinking that Harnett County might be a good fit. It is southwest of Garner, an easy commute, and is one of the least "developed" areas in the Triangle.
I would check out Lillington, Angier, Buies Creek, Erwin, and Dunn.
right now, whatever is "within an hour or so driving distance of Garner",
has a near future of "much more than an hour" if people keep moving here.
so, please be prepared to endure a shopping center (or something)
being built next to your once rural "homestead" and the rules/restrictions
which the county/city will bring along with it....especially if sewer is extended.
