Default $4.99/LB for red peppers???

Okay, I realize and accept that things are a bit more expensive in NC than the northern town from where I relocated......but really......$4.99/LB for red peppers??? What gives? I alternate between Harris Teeter & Kroger, and though some food items pricier here (and some are about the same as up north.....), I continue to be amazed at what the local stores are charging for red peppers!

So now, in addition to Kluski noodles (which I can't seem to find anywhere around the Triangle).....I have to add red peppers to my shopping list for my next trip up to Pennsylvania.

$2.99 lb at Food Lion this week. Although I'd probably wait for another store to have them on sale if I could avoid the dreaded Food Lion!

That's exactly the same price charged up North in central NY outside Syracuse unless there is a sale! not just an NC problem

Oh yeah, I was going to say there are plenty of times I saw red peppers for $4.99 lb in MA!

I really don't see the difference in food prices here except for the tax. I even kept a little file on who has the best prices on the staples I buy:

Trader Joe’s

- fish
- organic yogurt
- bread
- eggs

Kroger

- organic milk $2.55
- canned beans
- olives
- refried beans
- rice cakes
- shredded cheese

Food Lion

- V8 $3.49

Hmmmm.....then maybe PA just had cheap red peppers. Who knew? I'm thinking I used to get them for $1.99/LB on sale (2.99/LB regular price?) at Giant Eagle (PA grocery store), before I moved to NC.

Going back a few years here, but in NY, red peppers were like 69 cents a pound. If they've hit 4.99 up there, I'd be stunned!!!

We get ours at Costco. A bag of 6 peppers (all red, or 2 red, 2 yellow and 2 orange) for around 6 bucks.

Yes, the price is a joke. Red cabbage is almost as bad. Usually around 2 dollars a pound in HT. I got a full one for 69 cents at the Raleigh farmers market last week, and the staff were friendlier.

Yup, the Farmer's Market and Aldi is another option.

That is the problem. Kroger and Harris Teeter are some of the most expensive grocery stores in the triangle. They are great, but expensive. Its only a good deal during triple coupons etc, but you can't really do that well on produce. Thats why we designate a small area in our yard for veggies. They freeze well too!

Bell peppers are also seasonally priced. For a good part of the year they are on the heftier side of pricing, but then there is a good 3 month stretch at least where the prices come down. Harris Teeter always charges more than everyone else, and if you shop there make sure you look at the organic ann NON-organic prices. The organic produce has purple signs.....I don't know if Raleigh has a "Shoppers" there but their produce is always very reasonably priced compared to everyone else, including Costco.
