I would appreciate it if you all would stop judging me. If I want to keep my landline I'll keep my landline. I don't need to be judged by complete strangers. And yes, my wireless landline will go down if I lose power, but I have a corded phone in my closet that I save for times like that. So I don't need electricity or the internet for that phone to work.

Regardless of keeping or not keeping my phone, my biggest obstacle is finding an alternative to my bundle without needing a credit check.

You're not understanding.

If you lose power, your corded landline will not allow you to make or receive calls. The only solution is to purchase a backup power supply.

This assumes you have a VOIP line, which if you have a TWC bundle, you most likely do. Is your phone a copper line or VOIP?

Yes it will. A corded phone does not rely on electricity. I have used it many times in the last few years during natural disasters and it worked just fine. I don't know what my phone line is. I just know that I have a corded phone that I've plugged into a regular phone jack when power was out and it worked.

The wired telephone in your house uses the nominal -48VDC supplied by the phone company, through the phone lines that connect to a large power system at the Central Office (or from a remote located in neighborhood), so it certainly does rely on electricity - just not the AC at your house. If the CO/remote loses power, it then runs on gen sets & batteries until those die. Then your phone stops working.

I"m not going to keep arguing with you people. During both Fran and the two ice storms I lost power, but was still able to plug my corded phone into a phone jack in the wall and had phone service. The old fashioned corded phones from the 80's did not rely on electricity to work. I was able to use that phone for almost two weeks when I didn't have power.

Hurricane Fran was in 1996. You didn't have VOIP back then. So yes, copper phone lines did still work. You have a different situation now. If you lose electricity (and thus, VOIP) now, plugging a corded phone into the wall will only allow you to make 911 calls.

I'm not judging but considering your earlier comments about bad credit I'd cut service to bare minimum and use the savings to improve the financial situation. The only essential service you need is Internet. You can get that from TWC for $50 or even less. Instead of cable TV you can get Sling, Hulu, Netflix or premium channels a la carte online. Or even use Yahoo Video and other sites for free. We got rid of TV and spend only less than $20 on such services.

Regarding landline - i honestly don't know how you were able to use a phone with TWC only. But if you truly want an old-fashioned landline that would cost you at least $30 per month. See this old post: Who provides old-fashioned land-line telephone service in Cary?

However, I also feel it's a waste of money, unless you are ill or disabled and require such phone for emergencies. You'd be essentially spending $360 or so per year to have a phone that you may or may not really need 1-2 weeks.

Otherwise with all the savings in just a couple of months you can buy either Ooma or a decent cell phone. Verizon has excellent service in the area, followed by At&t, which has very cheap pay as you go options. You can also use Skype instead of phone.

Just be realistic and think rationally what you truly need and what you could let go of. We've been living with just Internet and cell phones for several years already and we also had the whole shebang before.

Good luck!

Regarding the phone, I already have a cell phone and I have Verizon currently and have lousy service in my apartment. I'm switching to a prepaid plan with T-mobile to cut my bell bill in half. But without a landline of some kind, I will never be able to make or receive a phone call inside my apartment. Ooma isn't that cheap. You have to buy a $200 router to get their cheap service. I'll probably use Vonage for $10/month instead.

For TV, I plan on getting a Mohu leaf antenna and save for a cheap roku. I'll keep TWC for internet.

I just love how people here keep telling me what I do or don't have when they don't live with me. STOP TELLING ME I CAN'T USE A PLUG IN PHONE WHEN I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT I CAN!! Raleigh STILL has VOIP lines. There are plenty of people who don't have wireless or cell phones, but miraculously can still make a phone call. Imagine that??

Helps if you learn the technology. Do you know what VOIP is? Voice Over Internet Protocol ... key word being INTERNET. If the internet goes down, so does the phone line.

If the internet is down, and your TWC VOIP line is also down, you will not be able to plug a corded phone into the wall and make calls (other than possibly 911 calls).

So no ... what you think you know for fact, you actually don't.
