Good thoughts. Thank you. Believe me! WE DON'T want to throw our tax money away. We've been here now 20 years, many years without children. So, moving seems drastic to disconnect and do what so many others have done - just give up on your community and 'GO WEST YOUNG MAN GO WEST'. Manifiest destiny won't work any more.

Move or find an alternative? Thank you for the heads up that tuition could increase. It supports our idea that we want to solve the public schoool system problem in time for our kids to re-enter. We were cornered into private school.

Interesting that I saw yet another real estate article in the N&O this weekend that mentioned that a person looking in Raleigh for good deals should consider the neighborhood school. I think this is false advertising.

Wink Request a Hardship Transfer

Here in florida when there is a situation as yours with children in school you can always request a hardship transfer if you go to your child's current school regional office and request a hardship transfer based on two different schools, two different schedules, to far from your home, too far from your work place, or you might opt to transfer both your kids to a school on your path to your work place or your husband's work place, grandparents home what have you. Look it up call the school's regional office and make calls, confirm in written form certified if you must. but request the help. you will get it.

If no one listens then go to the superintendent of schools in your area if to no avail then call your county or city representatives or state representatives to help you if the regional office won't help.

Good Luck. God's speed.

That's great, but it doesn't sound like there's such a thing in Wake County, NC. It sounds like they pretty much put your kids wherever they need to in order to fill their quotas.

You can apply for a transfer and if you're denied, you can present at an appeal hearing. It didn't work for us and we WANTED year round. Go figure.

Someone said to me recently "we've been robbed in our livingrooms!" That's certainly how it feels from my vantage point.

I see at the bottom of our new Year Round calendar that the BOE also reserves the right to conduct school on Saturdays and on the vacations 'in case schools must be closed'. What is THAT? No one has talked about closing schools. Is that just a scare tactic?

Yes, they reserve the right to do that in case of natural disaster, but I don't remember them ever having to resort to that.

Back when I was going to school (in the day of the dinosaur, haha) in Johnston Co., I know we had a few Sat. school days that I'm pretty sure Wake Co. had as well. In my opinion, they were SUCH a waste because we never HAD actual classes on those days. We watched cartoons and movies all day.

I do remember area schools having class on Saturdays after one of our major weather events. I don't remember if it was Hurricane Fran (1995), the Big Snow (2000) followed by other smaller snows, or the Ice Storm (2002), but one of those events caused so many off days that there was a make up day or two on Saturdays.

And if you were around for any of those events, you realize those were exceptional times.
