My daughter is in college now, so schools are not a personal issue with me, but as a former parent and an educator, and a taxpayer still supporting area schools, I empathize completely with parents in the Triangle facing school re-assignments for what seems like annually.

This is absurd, all the way around. Cutting a child's losses, or a school system's, shouldn't be approached with busing, but by sound educational approaches to even-out the educational field.

Are there any folks like me, without school-age children in the WCPSS, working with you parents?

Default Err, let me amend what I said

You know, for me to state that just because my own child is in college now, that schools are not a personal issue with me, is rather short-sighted. I am going to need these children in our schools, to run this country, and take care of me in my old age -- when all I do is babble and won't know what's going on around me, much less in the schools.

The school mess has not been a secret its been an issue for three years and yet people still move here and then they complain about it. Same thing with the water issues the growth issues, ect but people look right past all the issues and move here any way. I dont get it, please do your research before you move here and you will know what your getting. I dont feel sorry for any one who made a free will choice if they already knew what was happing here and turned a blind eye and moved.I feel sorry for every one who already lived here before the problems were created by growth and the leadership sold them and kids out for a tax base and malls on every corner. Its all spilt milk at this point.

If people would stop coming to Wake County, schools could catch up.

Default No Perfect Place To Live

There is no perfect place to live, just better places. You have to take the good with the bad and you have to make sacrifices. People move here from up north, get angry and fustrated and decide to move back. Why did they leave in the first place? Because they were angry and fustrated. So it doesn't matter where they move because they will always find something to complain and get angry about.

My point exactly...the miserable that lived in NY will become the miserable that live in NC! The positive people that moved to NC will remain positive. Why is it that those that are so unhappy STAY? And for those that did move, why are they still on the NC forum??? So many questions...

Vicki

"3 years"??? Ha! In the 30 years that I've lived here, we've always complained about the overcrowded schools and the overcrowded roads! Why stop now???

Reassignment is a way of life in many areas, not just NC. But, for anyone considering a move it is a real concern. And the rezoning makes no sense to most of us. Families on one side of the street go to one school and on the other side of the street go to another. Sometimes, as the original post kids from the same family will be in different schools and schedules. I personally experienced this as a child in CA. it was awful and I don't want my kids to experience this. Private school is one option.
Not every family with children in private schools are wealthy. We have elected to put our kids in private schools for many reasons. The concern about reassignment is definitely one of those reasons. However, it is ignorant to think that all people with kids in private schools can "afford it" Some of the greatest kids and greatest families in private schools may have help. And, no one knows who is getting help and who isn't.
I urge every parent to look into private schools. There may be none that are right for your family. Some private schools are awful. I mean really awful. Read the websites thoroughly and you'll get a good idea before going from school to school.

Vicki and g4j88--This is not about grumpy, miserable newcomers moving here from NY who just want to complain. I know native Wake residents who are unhappy with the system, I know MANY MANY people (newcomer and native alike) who have tried to work with the system--offering suggestions, doing research, etc.

It is such a cop out to say that its people who like to complain but not do anything to help the situation.

If schools are vital to you, avoid Wake County until growth stops and Dr. Burns can catch up.

Why pay taxes and not use the schools you're supporting?
