What do you think of Apex Middle School? New to the area with a rising 6th grader, so trying to get a sense of what this school is like academically, socially, and in terms of extra-curriculars. For example, looking at the school website, it appears they only offer band instead of both band and orchestra, plus less than half the clubs that Davis Drive middle offers. Their score on greatschools.com's gone down to a 7 and their free/reduced lunch % has gone up. Would really appreciate any feedback on what you've experienced at this school or heard about!
OMG... a 7 on greatschools.org Your child's life will be ruined if they attend as they will be destined to be a road-side sign twirler.
Concerning the % of free & reduced lunch, IMAGINE all the good if educated more affluent people didn't self-segregate by fleeing/avoiding schools with some economic diversity. Let me help... your kids would still do fine while helping to raise up the less fortunate children.
My sisters kids went there. No issues. One thing with clubs is they tend to change/appear/disappear...depends on who is at the school and what the interest level is, etc. My kids are 3 years apart and there are way more clubs at DDMS now than when they were there. Different schools have different things. DDMS doesn't have a choir, West Cary not only has choir it's a show choir. What are YOU going to do to make the school as great as you want it to be?
Obviously I don't take too much stock in the greatschools "7" and the free and reduced % since I'm still considering the school. I'm not sure why some people get so defensive and offended when test scores and school data are mentioned. I know there's more to a school than a number, but when you're new to the area, that's all you have for a starting point. I also mention them because I see they've changed since the last time I checked and I'm wondering if there are factors I'm unaware of that account for those changes.

Keep in mind they are building a new middle school in Apex - Apex Friendship Middle. Make sure you know where you are going to be attending. People absolutely love Apex Friendship HS and it's going to be near there. Base school changes may be why the number of F&R is increased.I think there are some lower income families in the area just south of downtown Apex. That may also be why the F&R number is a bit higher.

ZOMG There are POOR people in Apex?!?! The audacity! Head for the hills!
I went to Dillard Drive Middle school which was one of the highest F&R lunch rates for any school in Western Wake County at the time......somehow I survived despite being from a higher tax-bracket family.
If you can get into Salem Middle school it may be worth looking into. I have two kids there and we love the teaching staff and how they blog daily as well as how they emphasize core values that will help the kids be good adults.
So much really depends on the parents being home when your child comes home from whatever school.
!
I think in general an 18 year old is capable of walking herself home from the school bus stop and in most suburbs in America, I'll go out on a limb and say machete wielding maniacs (this one is from CARY) aren't an everyday problem.
