the quote i've received from my builder's subcontractor for pre-wiring of home security, surveillance cameras, home automation and surround sound is ridiculously expensive so I am weighing whether it makes sense to do it afterwards with a combination diy / wireless solutions available out there. I was at Lowes yesterday and noticed a separate station for home automation. I didn't have a chance to speak to the person but will next time.

I'm thinking combination of nest, ring and other similar devices. I'd be interested in hearing from others here.

Wireless can be extremely good if you invest in a high-end solution. Ubiquiti Networks' UniFi series is AMAZING. You could get a 3 pack of APs and get incredibly good coverage in even a huge house.

I wired my entire house when it was built 2 years ago, and I haven't terminated a single Ethernet cable since.

Thanks!
I spent a week at Camp Kanata during 3 summers at the end of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.

At that time it seemed hundreds of miles from home (nearby Louisburg).

I cried upon seeing my mother's handwriting on a letter she wrote to me.

I remember some forgotten drama where the camp's director held me in his lap comforting me.

That director, Steve Gergen, would years later be charged with some sort of child exploitation.

Just thought you'd enjoy a little history.

It was funny how I always visualized the lake in "Friday The 13th" being just like Camp Kanata's...

And it rhymed with the song, "Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda, Here I am at Camp Granada." LOL!

No AC whatsoever at the camp then around 1980.

I'd imagine that would be reasonable. What are you wanting to wire for? Like, what types of wiring, how many wires you running, etc.

Make sure they wire in some spots in the ceiling for Wireless access points, not just wall jacks.

POE (power over ethernet) Wireless AP's are great and lot less noticeable than some some flashy router with 16 antennas.

We have a wired house with access points in every room and WAP setup on each floor of the house. It's quite wonderful.
