I get the allure of Al's, but it didn't blow me away. (Not bad either). Close by, I liked Merrits better. Personal preference, and can't go wrong either way.
Pretty sure Merritts is BLTs only. Do they serve burgers? Certainly BLTs are their claim to fame.
For an unusual burger go to the Saxapahaw General Store and get a goat burger.
So far, after extensive research, we wanted to try Johnson's Family BBQ, Stanbury, Nashers, Beasleys, Motto and Nanas. Taste is now added to that as well.
We ate at Beasleys and although we didn't have the friend chicken, we weren't that impressed with the food. And the chairs were uncomfortable, which didn't make us feel like hanging around.
Nanas on the other hand was an experience. Just the kind of menu we like, very interesting things, not your every day. The only caveat is parking, it's pretty hard to find, so arrive early.
When I went to find the website for "More", I found out it's also owned by the same people who own "Taste". More has been doing a special chef's tasting menu lately, which looks great.

While it seems like the overall experience of Beasleys wasn't what you were looking for, why go to a Fried Chicken joint and not eat their signature dish?
I read (Triangle Food Blog) that Speckled Hen had their last serving recently. It hinted that they may be making changes and reopening in a new mode. I'd call first just to be sure.
Brew n Que in Cary is a hole in the wall, but truly a hidden gem when it comes to food. I'll also vouch for Nashers. They're still very good, but not quite as outstanding as they were in their first 4-6 months.
