Sure hope our local law enforcement will not have their attempts to
catch criminals hampered by how it makes illegal immigrants feel.
Heck I bet the checkpoints makes those with outstanding warrants
a tad nervous too.
Maybe the "outstanding warrant" people that have flown under the radar
can protest and get the nightly news to tell their story of how they feel
threatened when police come to the school to meet the kids, or
do checkpoints.
For years the US law enforcement has been told to stand down on immigration. On the other hand, I knew of an instance where the Mexican authorities refused to extradite a Mexican citizen to stand trial for the murder of his wife here in the US.
Many well meaning, middle class Americans are unaware of the tremendous cost of these trade and immigration arrangements our leaders have made without our consent.
You are so right.
That's the only good thing about Trump. No other politician had the cojones to take on these vital issues.
Next step would be to end birthright citizenship. If your parents are not here in legal status, you must apply and be approved when you become an adult just like any immigrant.
These "anchor babies" are being used to justify not deporting illegal parents. Some women even cross into the US in active labor to have the baby born in San Diego instead of Tijuana. Asians fly to the US for the same reason.
With an INS person as a Mom, I do understand immigration issues.
Not that it matters at all in this thread, but the little kid who was killed recently by the runaway dump truck (can't remember what town it was), the person in charge of that truck was illegal.
We have DUI checkpoints with questionable legality in order to catch our own legal citizens doing something wrong. If that's ok, then this is definitely ok.
Yes, he was illegal. But listen to what you are saying. Anyone could have made that mistake...yes even a legal US citizen. Him being undocumented had NOTHING to do with his negligence.

What? Had the LAW been enforced, he likely would never have been here to be driving that truck without a license, and that boy may still be alive.
Even if the contractor had obeyed the law and not hired an illegal worker, this could have been prevented.
So much fault at all levels. It doesn't matter if anyone could have made this mistake - this is one child's death that could have been prevented.
This problem has grown and festered for a long time. Apparently the US has over 940,000 illegals / criminals that have been told to leave the country but stayed. It'll will take a lot of work and time to correct this problem.

I think US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) estimates that 11 million illegals live in the US.

No the people I am talking about have specifically been told to leave. Been through the court system but decided to stay and further ignore the laws of the US. As Trump said he would. ICE is concentrating on these criminals that are known to the authorities. Over 940,000 of them.
I think this thread should be locked. It will not head in a good direction. There are people who have very small minds that, for some reason they can only see a small picture of the undocumented immigrants and the relatively small number who are "bad hombres" and not what the vast majority contribute to our country and economy. Not everyone is so small minded, but those that are seem to be very loud.
"On Monday around 4 p.m., when he was leaving the school district’s Department of Maintenance, he encountered a driver’s license checkpoint near the intersection of Hamlin Road and Industrial Drive. The checkpoint was being conducted by the Durham County Sheriff’s Office just a three-minute drive from the School for Creative Studies, a public school for sixth through 12th graders that has a Latino population over 20 percent."
You didn't really connect the story being about a checkpoint close to a school sparking controversy - and even in the article it says that the checkpoint was a '3 minute drive' from the school in question. Even on city streets, it seems that quite a distance could be covered in THREE minutes. Even sex offenders don't have to live THAT far from a school or at least it is not defined in terms of 'drive time'. Heck, in many areas, if you drive 3 minutes you are much closer to another school than the last one.
Extremely poor writing in this article. Horrible logic to invoke a controversial subject. Bad choice of a title to put in the subject line too, OP.
Yes, police officers are supposed to tell ICE when they encounter someone who has no documentation or whose documentation they think may be fraudulent. What is new there? The fact that they do it in some places and not in others .. well a lot of that has to do with local 'politics' but it is their job and they are supposed to do it.
If some of the kids from a school are of legal driving age but do not have legal papers that allow them to have a legal valid license or insurance, etc. but they are driving anyway .. kids or not, they can and should be stopped (not that I think, given the description of the distance from the school that this particular checkpoint was set up, and the fact that kids have cellphones and use them constantly, didn't mean they were more likely in fact to avoid that checkpoint than the average citizen was!).

So what other laws should people choose to ignore? Shop lifting? Should law enforcement turn a blind eye to that?
'Undocumented immigrants' you mean illegal immigrants. So enforcing a countries laws is now 'small minded'?
