Visit Chapel Hill. We moved 2 years ago to work from home, and have had several friends move to the area since, choosing Chapel Hill after researching the other options you mention. Lots of diversity, and a strong community vibe in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Very welcoming to incoming high earners and refugees.
We moved to Southern Village, which I was initially unsure of, but we love it. Houses are 15-20 yrs old and varying budget. There is a small village center with a wonderful coop grocery, movies, restaurants, Dr offices, salon... It is a fantastic social draw for children and you don't have to drive. Walk to elementary and middle schools, short bus ride to high school.
