The South Wake Park Project is a grassroots effort initiated by Fuquay Varina residents, who have been working for over a year to bring a regional park to Wake County along the Hilltop-Needmore corridor in southern Wake County. We would like to communicate with you the many benefits the project would provide for local residents, and all of the County, and hopefully gain your support for this proposed regional park. For information, please see information here: https://southwakeparkproject.com/
The southern portion of Wake County is the fastest growing area of the county and the least served by the Wake county parks system. Creating a much needed park on the former Crooked Creek golf course property (220 plus acres, off of Route 401, near the future 540 outer loop) can save Wake County millions of dollars. The park property includes varied terrain: flat, hilly, bluffs, wetlands. The property includes 5 ponds and 2 streams, 4.5 miles of paved trails, 3 restroom facilities, irrigation system throughout the property, 6 bridges, a dam, a tunnel,a community/visitor center, and a maintenance facility.
67 people a day move into Wake County. The majority of that growth is in the Fuquay Varina, Holly Springs, Apex, and Cary area. 27-35 acres of open space are lost to development every day in Wake County. A new regional park can be ready by the end of the year. Please take amoment to look at the website.
This is a really interesting idea. I remember following the downfall of the Crooked Creek golf course and wondered what became of it.
I also wonder what the residents think of this plan - are they behind it? I can see both sides from their perspective...
All the Crooked Creek folks I've talked to think it's a great idea ... probably much preferable to abut a large park/ greenway than more construction and new development. At the same time, this is a boon for south Wake county -- a much broader geographical area.
What happened with the Conservation Fund effort to buy it?
This effort is in conjunction with the Conservation Fund. The land owners have signed a contract with The Conservation Fund to sell the land for the purpose of creating a regional park. As I understand it, within a limited time they are hoping to obtain enough funding and to get the county on board; otherwise the contract with CF would expire and the landowners might sell the property to a developer. This is a limited time opportunity to save this valuable green space.
what's the price tag for the citizens of Wake County? Has Fuquay considered making a sizeable investment in the cost?
Both of those numbers are undetermined. We are working with Fuquay to get them to make an investment in the property since it will most benefit residents of that town, but there is no commitment yet. The total cost for Wake County is still being determined as they are conducting a study for the estimate of converting the property into a park. Regardless of the cost of conversion, however, this project would still be several millions of dollars lower than the current plans to create a park from scratch in a more remote section of the county.
Submitted. I know that there is not enough room for this, but I would love more unpaved bike trails like they have at Crabtree County Park
Everyone who has ideas about what they'd ideally like to see this park look like, should take the park survey at https://southwakeparkproject.com/. The park characteristics are still being worked out and your input is helpful!

Yes. My "submitted" comment was in reference to me submitting my input to the survey.
