So I guess what you're all saying is you still get outdoors in the height of summer?

I do. I can remember only a few times living here all my life that I had to duck for cover because of mosquitos. I never used insect repellent on myself although my wife has some around here somewhere.

Yes. Also, if you go to the beach, the skeeters aren't as bad.

If I'm stationary, I use my thermacell. Its uses natural insecticides found in Chrysanthemum flowers (pyrethrin.) I have tree stands over swamps and I won't get bit if I have the thermacell running. I will walk out of the woods rather than sit without it.

I like All Terrain Herbal Armor Spray--you can get it at REI. No doubt DEET is really the most effective, but I once left permanent fingerprint impressions on a plastic water bottle and one of those underwater disposable cameras after I accidentally touched them when I had DEET spray on my hands. It basically melts plastic.

EcoSmart Organic Insect Repellant. I have found it at Target...you don't end up smelling like a chemical factory, it is very easy on the skin and senses. It was suggested to me by a friend who leads nature walks for Wake Audubon. I found that it works very well. The other thing you could do is spray your clothing with the heavy duty stuff and spray your skin with the organic. But you'll probably want to have "hiking clothes" that don't matter if the spray stains them a bit.

That said, I don't really go out in the heat of summer much...I'm a winter girl. Give me snow and ice and I'm HAPPY!!

Skin So Soft makes one now with SPF. I never loved the way it felt, a little sticky for me. But I haven't had an issue with mosquitoes since I had kids for some reason. They used to FEAST on me. Now they feast on my daughter. I've also never had a problem with mosquitoes except around dusk. I have seen bats around my house at twilight and I have to say the mosquito problem has not been that bad the last few years overall.

Yep. I modify some activities a bit but still do all the usual things. It's not so bad in the morning hours (before 9 or 10am maybe) and equally bearable in the late afternoon and evening (after 4pm or so) and since there's daylight for longer, it means you can still fit in most things. I do generally avoid being outside at the very, very hottest part of the day (11am - 2pm, IMHO) and sometimes will just use it for a nice nap.

On the farm - no choice
Nowadays - the yard won't cut itself. I'm too stubborn to pay someone else to do it while I still can, plus it's exercise.
Only one way to get acclimatized. Get out in it and sweat, but keep hydrated.

Summer is my favorite time of year. Mosquitos don't bother me, but when I'm in a skeetery place I use a natural repellent. YMMV. BiteBlocker is one that was developed here in NC and comes from tomato plants. They have products that are very effective against ticks as well as mosquitos.
