Hi guys! The hubs and I have decided to move to Raleigh from Nashville in January 18. We've spent the majority of our lives in Tennessee and most recently landed in Nashville which is quickly pricing us out. We visited Raliegh in 2015 and loved it but we're having a hard time figuring out where to live. We're in our 20s and would love an area that's considered somewhat "walkable". We're looking for apartments where we can walk out the front door to grab food or a coffee but we are looking to spend no more than $1200 a month. We don't have kids so we aren't concerned with any of that. We've just always lived in the suburban areas of a city and would like a different lifestyle this time around. Of course we looked at downtown Raleigh but realized quickly it was out of our price range. It doesn't have to be a downtown, just where amenities are within walking distance and I don't mean walking down an extremely trafficked road. We've looked around Crabtree mall but are worried about traffic there. We'd also like to live in updated and newer apartments within our budget if possible. What areas fit those parameters and budget? Any guidance would be much appreciated!

$1200/month for a couple seems to be doable for areas around downtown Raleigh (maybe not smack dab downtown but nearby). Unless of course you would want a 2 bedroom apartment.

What size apartment do you want? You can get a studio or 1 br for $1,000 to $1,00 in the Glenwood South area and downtown areas. Same for out around Cameron Village and North Hills, which are walkable. Anything larger in those areas will be over your price range.

You would like the Cameron Village area but I don't know about the prices there.

Also if you look on Zillow, there are tons of private rentals that could get you something in that price range that isn't in an expensive apartment complex.

You should check out North Hills, but I think the apartment buildings directly in the North Hills shopping center will be just out of your price range. When I first moved here, we lived at Jones Grant Urban Flats. I liked it because I could walk to Trader Joe's and BurgerFi sometimes, although I found myself driving more often than not. It's full of young people and has easy access to the highway and a plethora of grocery stores. Greystar has lots of buildings in the triangle at varying price points depending on how new they are.

Take a look at these Meridian at Sutton Square | Apartments in Raleigh, NC
Lots of really good options for food and drink within walking distance, actually right out your door. This would also be a short drive to the N Hills area as well.

Thanks for the responses! I guess I should have said - I've convinced my husband to move into a 1 bed, 1 bath but he refuses to look at any that are smaller than 800 sq ft. Any areas to absolutely avoid if we don't want to be around college kids? We want a young vibe, just not college aged. I really appreciate everyone's help so far!

More than 800 sf for less than $1,200 in any traditionally walkable area is going to be very difficult, if not impossible. You'll have to look hard for something that just happens to be within walking distance of a shopping center or other commercial development (like Meridian at Sutton Square, mentioned above). The closer you are to NC State, the more likely you are to be surrounded by college students.

There are less college kids on the north side of NC State towards Cameron Village than south of campus.

I think 800 ft+ with 1 bed/1 bath is doable with a $1200 budget, it will take some patience though and research.
