It's clear that Francis will have no say in player personnel going forward. Maybe he stays with the Canes in some nebulous honorary face-saving position, although one wonders what will be done with Waddell (presumably both he and Francis are paid a lot of money). Or Francis will hang around until he gets another job, either a team GM or some position with the league or the broadcast booth.
Maybe the players should be doing a little introspection. A bit of soul-searching.
Will they suddenly be better because Francis is not the GM?
Will they now put out consistent 100% effort because Francis is not the GM?
Finish checks? Get to the net? Fewer unforced giveaways?
I really hate that this was done now.
If it couldn't wait until end of the season, at least at mathematical elimination from playoffs.

Dundon sent a big message to season ticket holders, who happened to get their renewal offers for 2018-19 yesterday morning before the Francis announcement. Hard to say how many STHs were near revolt, but with the probability of making the playoffs on the order of 10% according to computer simulations, I believe it was a significant number.

We get the same STM deal right up to March 31. Why the rush?
Actually, this made me hesitate, rather than encouraged me to lay out $$$$Thousands.
How does removing Ron Francis as GM to President of Hockey Operations change anything? He is still with the Hurricanes organization & still in a spot to make or approve crappy personnel decisions Francis' new position creates a conflict for whoever they bring in as GM. Will still be a cluster f next season if they don't make bolder moves by really removing people that shouldn't be in carolina anymore Not sure Bill Peters has the respect of his players the way he should, thinking we will be in similar position next year even if we traded for better scoring players if Bill Peters remains as coach. The Hurricanes keep marketing themselves as great young team. The young team isn't producing except for rare couple like Aho and I don't even know who to name as the second I really hope the Hurricanes make better decisions for next season, really hard to remain a season ticket holder when they haven't made the playoffs for so many years
If the Hurricanes fail to qualify for postseason play, I expect Bill Peters to be relieved as head coach. I do not see Peters returning for the 2018-2019 season. The Hurricanes' next general manager deserves input on who the head coach is.
Whoever the new GM is has some work cut out for him. Looking at new coach in all likelihood, new goaltender for sure, new assistants probably, better forward depth (yes please).
The good news is there is a good young core to build around in guys like Aho and Slavin. TT/Pesce are also worth investing in. But everyone else is expendable.
This is going to be the off-season where in 5 years we will look back at say "This was the turning point to the current success" or "This is where the misery got worse".
