I was driving Westbound on I-40 with a 16' Penske and a car trailer. The grades weren't that bad, but I definitely wouldn't want to do it at night.

For what it's worth: I make the trip to Raleigh from Grand Rapids, MI quite often and kind of resigned myself to I-80/I-90 (Indiana & Ohio Turnpikes) and then I-77 south on through. More miles, longer road time and those pesky tolls but the upside is the roads stay in pretty good condition (especially after this brutal winter) and usually no construction delays. Set the cruise control for +3 over the limit, point the car the stay inside the lines and slog it out.

If you need to stop for the night, Parkersburg or Marietta, OH are a much better bet than Charleston. With all due respect to the fine folks of West Virgina, Charleston is one of the most depressing places you'll find in North America.

Travel safe...
