Newer cars (and newer phones) have a "driving mode" for texts. I don't even get notification of a text while I am driving and have an auto reply that is sent to the person texting me that says "I am driving right now, I will respond as soon as I safely can".
it's not just about getting notifications. I catch myself looking at my phone even when I don't get a notification just in case I do........sort of like a constant FOMO state.

Do you set that "driving mode" yourself when driving ?
If not, how does the phone know if you are driving or a passenger ??

I don't have that app, but I know my car's GPS knows when I'm driving and won't let me mess with controls. I think it has to do with the speed you're traveling at, like Pokemon Go. If you're going too fast to be walking around it will shut down.

My GPS does that too, which is annoying when a passenger is trying to set it while I drive.

It's the phone communicating with my car. I am the driver of my car 99.9% of the time. If I get into my husband's car, I am not connected to his bluetooth, so it doesn't go into driving mode. Well, that's not entirely true. Recently I had to drive his car for 3 hours while he drove mine. I hooked my phone up to his bluetooth so if he called me I didn't have to answer my phone by picking it up and putting it to my ear. But it's not activated in anyone else's car unless I connect to their bluetooth.
