There are not as many cafeterias around as there used to be. But K&W has always been pretty good in NC and SC. Also Morrisson's Cafeteria used to be very good, but they sold out to Piccadily or just closed down.

I do like K&W Cafeteria...especially their desserts.

I bring the average age down in the room by several decades every time I eat there though!

With the increasing price of food and the continual loss of customers over time, GC is struggling to survive. They used to be packed most of the time but not anymore and I can see where they have made changes to cut operating costs. A family of three with drinks will cost you $50...so it's definitely not inexpensive and you can't take home any leftovers. Compare that to Red Hot & Blue where I can get a nice big salad for $10 with enough left over for lunch the next day...so that's two meals for $10. GC can't touch that so guess which restaurant we eat at most often. GC does have a decent salad bar and I love their fried chicken.

GC is on its way out. Only question is how long. According to Wikipedia there were 485 GCs in 2008. Now there are 200. We go to the Glenwood location once or twice a year as a compromise when the family can't agree on somewhere else to go. I have nostalgia for traditional Southern cafeterias but not buffets.

So nobody goes to the "Golden Trough" anymore. Where are they going now?

I have to admit I enjoy going to the K&W in North Myrtle several times a years...especially around Thanksgiving. BTW Nick, Silvia Hatchell is one of my neighbor's over at the beach. She's a block away on the same street. She loves walking around the Cherry Grove section.

I have a very high tolerance for bad food provided it's cheap and plentiful. I used to frequent GC for breakfast, rarely go now because it's gotten almost inedible. The service is good and the same folks have worked there for years, but the food has consistently gone downhill. When I consider it inedible it's pretty awful.

The Durham Hwy 55 location sucks! Their parking lot is filled with holes, and the buffet is expensive and junky. It cost me close to $20 (with a coffee and soda) to eat there. I would rather eat at the "nursing home" K&W's. Metro Diner should open up more locations around here, they are pretty good

That is cool! We tried to get her on our BOD for my workplace; she was too busy for us haha!

She's too busy for any of us too. She smiles and waves to her neighbor's down here, but never stops to chat because she's always talking on that phone
