but I have to admit I really shrug at how it went down.
This is the reaction of most people in Durham and of the Durham government, but of course people from elsewhere find the need to involve themselves. But then that was the point of the NC law, stopping local ordinances from carrying out the will of its people.
I agree this is a good thing. We need to abolish all signs of the past and just look forward. Eliminate any memory of civil war, of slavery and oppression.
Eventually we wont have any memory of slavery or civil war and wont that just be a better place for everyone!
By "good" I meant as in seeking charges for these vandals...not tearing down war memorials.

Was a vote taken on this issue in Durham? Just because you say it's the will of the people doesn't make it so. My guess is that it's not the will of the people at all.
Nice try, but this was going on well before Trump won the presidency.
Nah. It's become worse since last November ... they're even going after those helping to gentrify neighborhoods. Trump winning has them more nutso than ever.
You are right, there has never been a poll that I am aware of. But this is Durham, the type of county that went for Clinton over Trump by a mammoth 60-pt margin. I'd imagine if you polled Durham citizens about removing the statue from the courthouse it would easily pass. It is a pity that was no longer a legal option to pursue thanks to overreaching from our state assembly.

No, as someone else pointed out, it was ramped up after the Charleston shooting. But if you want to use your version of history, I can't stop you.
Besides, you're forgetting that this was set off by an ALT-RIGHT rally.
Not true. This issue actually started to gain traction after the massacre in Charleston a few years ago.
Yep. Nikki Haley saved her political career by getting the flag removed in Columbia and things snowballed from there.
